FAQs

If your website is built with WordPress website, then yes.

It really isn’t WordPress’s fault… the platform just grew so fast. There are over 55,000 WordPress add-ons (aka plugins) and it powers 35% of the web.

All websites require some kind of maintenance and they are like cars. You must change the oil, rotate the tires, and put in required repairs if you want to reliably get from point A to B.

In our experience, a solid WordPress Care Plan must include

  • Weekly Plugin updates
  • 24/7 Uptime monitoring
  • Security scans
  • Performance scans
  • Daily Backups
Plugin updates are a roll of the dice. We’ve had to emergency patch 4 plugins in a week to a website that had “zero-day” security vulnerabilities.

Other times there are only 5 security issues per year on certain websites.

Barring security patches (of which there are many), there are 2 factors to how often your website plugin needs to be updated.

  • The number of plugins installed on your website. More plugins = more chances of security patches that need to be applied.
  • The type of plugins. Certain plugins are better maintained and coded.

It is common for a business website to have between 15 and 30 plugins installed and require 10 to 20 individual updates per month.

There are over 55,000 plugins to choose from and some need to be updated on a weekly basis.

It isn’t all bad news though… in the 2 years since we’ve provided weekly plugin updates for 60+ clients we have had two security issues that got through. Both websites fixed within 4 hours with zero data loss.

Conflicts between your website’s theme, plugins, and WordPress itself are not uncommon.

These conflicts can take down your website and require a restoration of your website or replacement of a plugin.

If your website is no longer working because of a plugin update please contact us and we’ll take a look.

Note: clients on our Care Plan should not attempt to update plugins themselves. That is our job 🙂

When we onboard your website onto your care plan a lot of effort goes into making sure you are set up properly, the software is updated and stable, and there are no major skeletons in the closet.

We require a 3-month commitment for our care plans to cover the time and effort we spend getting you up to speed.

After that you can cancel at any time before the end of your billing cycle.

We use Liquid Web’s cloud-based hosting. Your website is virtual and cannot be lost.

Daily offsite backups are stored in a totally separate part of the United States. You are in good hands 🙂

We partner with Liquid Web, one of the top premium hosting companies in the world.

GoDaddy, Hostgator, Bluehost, etc aren’t even in the same league as Liquid Web when it comes to performance, security, and support.

Hosting your email with a web design agency is so 1999.

We recommend hosting your email with an enterprise solution such as Microsoft Office 365 or G Suite (Google’s Business Email).

Your email always needs to end in your company name (no Hotmail or Gmail) and we can assist you with your G Suite emails. However, you will be paying them directly so that you get their enterprise-level support.

Your domain name is your most valuable online asset even though it costs $15 or so a year.

Be careful to renew it every year and to not be scammed.

Domain name renewal notices usually only come in email and should be sent from your existing domain registrar.

To see where your domain name is registered please visit WHOis and type in your domain name.

Also, if the domain name renewal is more than $30 a year it probably is a scam.

When in doubt please contact your existing domain registrar. If you don’t know who that is give us a call and we’ll look into it. We can’t stand the idea of anyone losing their domain name.

The client should always take ownership and make payment of their domain name.

A domain name is the most important point of access to your website and more valuable that the website itself (if the website is backed up somewhere that is).

Since a domain name typically costs $15 or less per year we recommend renewing your domain name for 5 years at a time and putting several notices in your calendar.

It really is so important.

99% of the time these are robots blasting out these “I’ll fix your website” for you in the hopes of landing you as a client.

Please contact your web designer or developer to ensure this is a legitimate issue.

No website is perfect and it’s best to have someone you know look into it.
